Subaru should be used to life- apart from its obvious unfairness towards him- and the surprises it gave him all the time. But this. This was on the lists of things he never imagined happening to him.
“So, you and Sei-chan finally did something hmm?” If he glanced over to his right he would see her wide grin and her crazy outfit as well after nearly ten years since he last saw it.
He was hallucinating. He really was. Mirrors were just… talking to him. Yes that was it. Hokuto’s voice wasn’t really talking right next to him. Of course not.
“Did you have fun with him at least?”
He was about to sputter and blush a “Hokuto-chan” but then he remembered. She wasn’t really there. Old habits died hard didn’t they?
“Come on Subaru answer me! I know you can hear me!” If he turned around he would see her wings extend from her back as she jumped up and down in indignation at being ignored.
No. He was imaging it. He was. He had looked for her everywhere in the spiritual world and in the tree already. He had tried talking to her before everything else had happened too but it hadn’t worked. This was just his insanity talking to him now. Seishirou was dead. Hokuto was dead. And he was living.
He must be insane. Yes, that’s what it was.
“Subaru! Stop ignoring your sister!” Her eyes were filling with tears now.
He had to. This was his sanity he was talking about. He couldn’t hope like this anymore. Not since-
I… you…
No, everything was gone now and he had no hope.
***
“I did warn you Hokuto-chan.” He was smirking at her- she’d forgotten how much she hated it. “He thinks what I did to him last night was just his mind playing tricks on him.”
“He just needs me to talk to him some more.” Hokuto crossed her arms glaring.
“No,” he was blind now, both sockets completely void of his once gold eyes and yet he still managed to look directly at her somehow giving her chills when she looked at him, “you won’t. He doesn’t believe you’re there. You must have forgotten yourself what it was like to be living. Humans can be so stubborn sometimes.”
***
He didn’t sleep anymore. What was the use? He was sure those nightmares would come back again and this time they’d be even worse. All the faces of the people he had killed in the last few weeks. He knew their names, he knew their families, and he knew they deserved it.
That’s why he couldn’t sleep anymore. He didn’t want to. Those dreams. Anything to stop them.
He wasn’t waiting for Seishirou-san to come again like last night. He really wasn’t. It was just his imagination last night. One of those crazy dreams again.
Right?
***
“Do you know if he’ll be-?” Wait- who was she talking to? Hokuto closed her eyes and looked away from him. “Never mind.”
He chuckled shaking his head, “Hokuto-chan you of all people should know the answer to that question. You’re his twin, aren’t you the one who knows better than anyone how he feels right now?”
***
Voices in his head. Just voices in his head. They came from the mirrors didn’t they? He sat up staring at the one in front of his bed and watched it intently. Yes, he had always seen her in mirrors before. That’s why he had gotten rid of them all. How did this one get in?
Hadn’t he taken it out?
Or maybe someone had put it back in. Or maybe he had bought one and had forgotten about it.
***
“So that’s it?” Hokuto snapped angrily. “I just sit back and watch him make a mess of himself after- after what you did?!”
“That didn’t stop you before.” Seishirou shrugged nonchalantly.
“That was different! I was-”
“You’re still dead.”
Hokuto wanted to scream at him, she wanted to kick him and wipe that stupid indifferent look on his face but she knew she couldn’t. Instead she closed her eyes, fists tightening at her sides, and stated clearly, “I’ll still try.”
***
Voices. Yes, that’s all they were. They were nothing more. Maybe the leaves, or the trees, or the petals from the trees outside were the ones who were doing it. Or maybe the house. Or maybe! They were spirits. Subaru held onto that explanation tightly letting it expand in his mind and let it reassure him. Yes that would explain the creaking going around. They were spirits. Just spirits.
He’d exorcise them tomorrow. For now he’d just lay here in the darkness.
Maybe Seishirou would visit him tonight?
